Dentistry and Custom Bit Fitting

Dentistry

The health of the oral cavity, though often overlooked, is essential to the comfort and performance of your horse.  Sharp enamel points can lead to bruising, ulcerations and lacerations of the tongue and cheeks.  These conditions can easily be missed without the use of sedation and an oral speculum.  Routine oral evaluation and flotation is essential to prevent more serious issues such as sinus infection and tooth root abscesses which may require more invasive medical and surgical care and could leave your horse on the sidelines for extended periods of time.

Custom Bit Fitting

Traditionally, horse owners select their horses’ bits with total disregard to the anatomy of the oral cavity.  Just as a saddle needs to “fit” a horse’s back, a bit should “fit” the horse’s mouth.

Dr. Evans has performed innovative research into the unique variations in depth which exist within the palates of horses.   With oral examination, measurements of key features of the horse’s mouth, and an evaluation of your horse under saddle, she can help you select an ideal bit for the horse’s personality, strength and individual oral anatomy.  Proper bit selection has shown to be a simple solution to previously inexplicable behavioral issues of otherwise gentle, responsive horses.

The results of Dr. Evans' research was published in The Journal of Veterinary Dentistry.  Her article can be found here.
